Advocacy groups, including Cycling NSW, Bicycle NSW and the Bicycle Network had previously stated they would not support laws requiring cyclists to carry ID in NSW.
In a Press Release by the NSW Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight, Duncan Gay today, instead of making identification compulsory from March, bicycle riders will be encouraged to carry identification or new cards with emergency contact details.
NSWs cycling reforms have made a positive difference to road safety, however the mandate of cyclists having to carry ID outrages cycling advocates and the public. This alternative is a great step forward and demonstrates the positive cooperation of the Government with the cycling bodies.
